What Is A Value Bet?

If you have any experience in the financial sector, you know what value investing is. It's when you invest in a stock that is low... not just low but very low! It's low because people don't consider it able to become any better.

And the people who truly profit from the stock market are the ones who bought this stock at the tiny price and watched it skyrocket.

A value bet is the same thing. It's a bet on an event in which the odds are against you (therefore there's that chance of winning a larger amount) however, you know that those odds are slightly incorrect.

We say "slightly" because many bookmakers usually set their prices within a certain range of each other. After all, any bookmaker that is WAY off will go out of business fast: they'll either make odds that are so favourable, they are overwhelmed with bettors and then with paying out or they'll make odds that are so unattractive that they'll hear crickets chirping because of the silence.

Even though bookmakers set prices within a certain range, they're not always accurate. Some offer slightly more generous odds and some offer slightly less generous odds because of how they consider the game to end up.

In the financial world, you want to find value investments and one of the ways to find those is by looking at the price to earnings ratio.

In the betting world, there are actually two ways to find whether or not a bet is a value bet. Ultimately, you want to discover if the odds in-line with the true probability or not.
